Street smart Belvedere school pupils are being taught how to stay safe with lessons in Jujitsu led by a 6th Dan martial Arts Master. Year seven girls at the independent all-girls school, in Liverpool's Princes Park,, are being put through their paces in the pioneering project to give them the skills and self-esteem to tackle potential confrontation in dangerous situations. Led by Karl Fitzsimons from the Global Jujitsu Academy in Old Swan, who has been active in martial arts for almost 30 years, the 11 and 12 year -olds are not only being taught techniques to defend themselves against would-be attackers, but are also being taught tactics to avoid danger in the first place. And, while the classes may be hard work physically, the trainee martial artists are already feeling empowered by their newly-acquired knowledge, Jujitsu techniques and confidence.
Jessica, 12 said: "I feel a lot more confident now and I would recommend that other girls do the course as we don't only learn about safety, we have a lot of fun as well."
Skye, 11 Said: "We are learning lots of routines to protect ourselves and will get a certificate if we memorise and demonstrate them."
Georgia, 12 added: "I feel better now that I'm able to protect myself . It has been hard work but interesting, and worth it."
Schoolteacher Sue freeman said: "There is no history of attacks on the pupils on or near the school premises, but we feel it is very important for all young people, especially girls, to be aware of risk situations. "These classes help them learn how not to get themselves into dangerous situations, but also provide them with tactics to protect themselves if they are unlucky." Mr Fitzsimons, who is working with the girls for the first time, said he is using a set Personal Protection Programme with a strong emphasis on safety to give the teenagers valuable skills to defend themselves. He said: "The pupils are not encouraged to fight any potential aggressors but to employ one of the numerous ways to bring a situation under control.
"These include using voice, body language, the ability to summon help and, only as a last resort, to use their ability to physically defend themselves using the techniques." During the classes, the pupils discuss safe behaviour and are taught, if they were unfortunate enough to be attacked, how to restrain and control the situation or to kick and punch effectively. They also learn to scream loudly and get away at the first opportunity. Ian Irwin, the vice-principal, added: "Of paramount importance to the school is the safety of our students. We also acknowledge the value of the Government's Every Child Matters agenda in promoting child safety, and providing peace of mind to parents and carers. This self-defence course provides a commonsense approach to everyday personal safety.
Big Thank you again to the Liverpool daily Post, and Caroline Innes for the use of this report. And a special thank you to the Belvedere School for their confidence in our teaching of Martial Arts.
