What is a Tatami?
Tatami, is a mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms. Tatami were made of a thick base of straw covered with a soft surface of woven rush. In Japan the size of rooms, are often measured in terms of "mats of Tatami." Tatami flooring is cool in the summer and warm in the winter and remains fresher than carpet during Japan's humid months. The Japanese have used this method of flooring, dating back to the Muromachi period (1338-1573).
A single Tatami usually measures 1.91 by 0.95 metres (6.3 by 3.1 feet).
These days the mats are made of foam, which is then covered in none slip plastic, this makes it easy to keep them clean, are long lasting and are not as hard to land on, especially as now we have a lot of juniors training.
