Saturday 11th July
An invitation to attend a seminar organised by our affiliated members at SSJJA was accepted by Kyoshi Karl Fitzsimons director of GJJA. A warm handshake welcomed us to the venue for our first joint seminar. We had arrived early and were able to help with some setting up of the 1st of two huge dojo's for use on the day. The venue was perfect for our needs and with the laying of mats and preparation of the tuck shop completed on time, we were able to change and await the arrival of students. 50 junior students of various ages soon started to arrive and around 20 adult students. These were followed by a large number of mums and dads all looking forward to seeing plenty of action from all those taking part. The seminar was to be held in two parts, with Sensei Peter Calaeta taking the children in the first half and myself being given the task of teaching the adults. New techniques and concepts where being shown to students for the first time and all appreciated the simplicity and effectiveness when applied in the right manner to a potential attacker.Far to quickly, lunch time arrived. A welcome break for some refreshments of which the children really enjoyed. I myself was kept busy with the signing of certificates before the start of the second half of the day. This time around 50 children lined up. A short warm up after the lunch break and then back into full swing. Starting with some fairly basic techniques in order to give the children confidence. Kyoshi Karl Fitzsimons then moved forward with some more demanding techniques and with the very able help of his assistants on the day, Joe and Sean, was able to help all those in difficulty without any problems. The day ended with group photos, presentation of the much sort after seminar certificates, lots of happy faces and a genuine excitement.
